Update: Success! Tried some drastic measures--I removed my /etc/X11/xorg.conf 
file, did a few aptitude upgrades, and used aptitude to remove and reinstall 
xserver-xorg. After the dust settled I now have a fully functional officejet, 
including pc send fax! Thanks very much, HP team, for all your work. The driver 
has certainly come a long way since the old hpoj days.
