I did not enter the ppd path manually. Actually this was my
first thought but then I thought I should leave this taks to
hplip.

I followed your advice in the side note which made me download a
multitude of dependant packages in addition to the ones that you
explicitly named. Then I did "make uninstall" and "make clean"
to have a perfectly clean base to start from. Finally I started
the compile again from scratch. 

This time it
worked ok and in consequence, the setup was the usual hplip
breeze.

Thanks again for your great help. Not to mention the great work
on this piece of software that enables us to use most hp printers
in a way that is absolutely competitive to what windows users
commonly expect.
