Bob,

To clean up your machine lets try this;

go to the directory for the hplip tar ball that you downloaded from the
hplip site. (ie /home/user/hplip-0.9.11)

run:

sudo make uninstall

once this is completed, run:

sudo rm -rf /usr/share/hplip

This should put us at a fairly clean system. Removing hplip from
synaptic seems somewhat temperamental, as it always wants to remove the
ubuntu-desktop for some reason. Which could be a problem.

Once we have removed the previous hplip install--in the same directory
above (ie /home/user/hplip-0.9.11), run:

make clean

then:

sudo apt-get install build-essential python2.4-dev python2.4-qt3
libcupsys2-dev libsnmp9-dev libjpeg62-dev lsb libtool automake1.9 libusb-dev

then:

./configure --prefix=/usr
make
sudo make install
sudo /etc/init.d/hplip restart
sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart
sudo hp-setup

Then you should be up and running.

The dependencies for dapper are different than breezy and the install
instructions are in the process of being updated, and should be updated
on the web with the next release of HPLIP, which should be soon.

Hope this helps!

Aaron
