Just to update you on the current status:
I tried to install hplip 0.9.11 packages from Debian unstable,
but could not get the dependency issues on my kubuntu dapper
cleared. So the installed packages were broken and did not work.

Then I retried with compiling the hplip source from scratch. The
compile worked without a glitch, but after install, I got what I
previously had: "Open device failed, will retry in 30sec." in
http://localhost:631

Then I ran the snmpwalk command that you suggested and got the
same result as reported further up.

Lastly I cleaned anything and currently I am using dappers
version 0.9.7, where I can run hp-setup successfully and
printing via hplip is working but there is no fax support.

snmpwalk is still reporting waht I had got.

I am slightly doubting whether it was wise (for me) to change to
(k)ubuntu 6.06 fairly early, although apart from the stone old
hplip packages that come with this freshly released system, I am
very happy with the system.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

regards
Eberhard
