I too have been having the same problems scanning with xsane/HPLIP 1.6.7. I have
tracked this down to the fact that the sane-hp backend only recognizes a Flatbed
source and not the ADF. It attempts to perform the scan as from a flatbed type
scanner without sending the ADF commands.

I'm not sure what to do about this as I'm not very familar with the SANE stuff.

I haven't tried the fax function yet so cannot report on that.
