can you run ps ax | grep hp and post the output?
chandler ksun # /etc/init.d/hplip start
 * Service hplip starting                       [ !! ]
 * ERROR: hplip failed to start
chandler ksun # ps ax | grep hp
20467 ?        Ss     0:00 /usr/sbin/hpiod
20493 pts/0    R+     0:00 grep --colour=auto hp
It looks like there may be an install issue, possible to do a reinstall?

Reinstalling did not help. Tried it about 4 times. Now I waited for the new version to try it out, but the error remains. Hoping to be able to scan with my laptop, I installed the driver on it but it has the same problem... any ideas what to try next?

So long,
Gerrit
