Yes, after posting my request for help I found some tips about trying just that. When I did, it got better BUT there was still some red - it looks like it's using it for anti-aliasing. For example, on a rectangle with rounded corners, the corners had fuzzy reds. This was both with Color + Black and Black Cartridge modes.

Hi Allan,
Did you try selecting either "Color + Black Cartridge" or "Black Cartridge" print modes in CUPS printer options page?

Subject: [Hplip-help] Driver using tri-color inkwell instead of black

Hello

When I print (anything!) that should just use the black ink, it seems to use the tri-color inkwell. Only found this out when that ink started to get low and all my blacks started coming out red.

This happens with anything - setting OOO to print black, it uses the tricolor.

I'm fairly certain it's a function of the print driver  as printing from OOO on Windows uses just the black inkwell.
This is on an HP1440 printer using the latest HPLIP, Dapper Kubuntu latest and patched.
