I have HPLIP working under OSX. I needed to add '-module' to the library flags in makefile.am for the sane scanner module.
It is my understanding that the sane modules need to be .so files, which under OS X are 'bundles', which the -module causes libtool to create. I also think that the the HPLIP project should drop the HPIJS stuff, or at least make it optional during the install/build scripts. I think you should have the option to just install the backend, io daemons and scanner support. I have used the latest gutenprint 5.0 with the hp backend and the output is FAR superior to the HPIJS and Foomatic.
