We haven't tested on Sabayon Linux, however hplip in theory should work as long as the dependencies are met. Have you installed the latest hplip? I'm not exactly clear on what the problem is exactly. Are you running hp-setup? how are you trying to configure the printer?
If you haven't installed hplip yet please do so.
