What happens if you run:

/etc/init.d/hplip restart
and
/etc/init.d/cups restart

if you see any errors, run

tail -f /var/log/messages

and then (in a different shell)

/etc/init.d/hplip restart
and
/etc/init.d/cups restart

and post any errors in the /var/log/messages.
