You can print/scan, etc over wifi. It is configure using the network option with hp-setup. A wifi connection is a network connection. If your wifi printer gets an IP address and as long as the computer can ping the printer IP address then the printer should be able to be configured for use with HPLIP.
run hp-setup select network, then if the printer isn't auto detected on the network select manual, etc. and enter the printer IP manually.
