Thanks, Aaron. I'll run the tail on messages tonight when I'm back on my
linux box.
I don't see any errors on boot and the "OK" sequence on the boot splash (not
sure what it's called) doesn't fail anything.
If I add /etc/init.d/hplip start to startup programs, is that a sudo command
in Ubuntu? Will it ask for a password every time I boot up (beyond the usual
log-in password)? I'll give it a go tonight. Thanks for your help :)

tail -f /var/log/messages
do you see any errors?
Do you see any errors about hplip on boot? HPLIP should be started on
boot up.
As a work around you may be able to add /etc/init.d/hplip start to the
System -> Preferences -> Sessions - > Startup Programs
But HPLIP should be running at boot.
