Hello,

now I have a system running with HPLIP 1.7.1 where hp-setup
always fails with:

error: Printer queue setup failed. Please restart CUPS and try again.

This error happens when I click "Next" on those hp-setup screen
where the queue name (and location and description) is shown.

This mail is very long - I hope I provided sufficient info
for your debugging because my problem is that I don't find any
useful log message which points out what the actual reason is.

Feel free to ask me any question because on this system
I can reproduce this error in any case.

For me it seems hp-setup does not set up a queue at all
and then fails because there is no queue. Reason:
I don't see any matching message in /var/log/cups/error_log
and there is no entry at all in /var/log/cups/access_log
when hp-setup should set up the new queue.

On the other hand hp-setup does re-start the cupsd without asking
for any user confirmation which is a bad idea because in particular
on a print server this means that all currently printing jobs
are stopped and after the re-start they will be re-printed again
from the beginning (think about a 1000 pages print job which gets
stopped at page 900 - all already printed 900 pages will be
re-printed again).

I run the HPLIP 1.7.1 RPMs from
http://software.opensuse.org/download/home:/jsmeix/SLE_10/x86_64/
on a Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 system with CUPS 1.1.23
on 64-bit AMD hardware.

Now what I did:

# rccups stop
Shutting down cupsd done

# rchplip stop
Stopping hpiod: [ OK ]
Stopping hpssd: [ OK ]

# rchplip start
Starting hpiod: [ OK ]
Starting hpssd: [ OK ]

# rccups start
Starting cupsd done

# lpstat -r
scheduler is running

I don't have any local print queue.

I have "LogLevel debug2" in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf

# echo 'TEST: before hp-setup -g' >>/var/log/cups/error_log

# hp-setup -g

For completeness the 'hp-check -g' output below which shows
another problem:

hp-check checks for compile-time requirements (e.g. header files
and a C compiler) but im my case (have RPMs installed) I need
only run-time requirements (e.g. libraries) but only in debug mode
it becomes clear what the result of a check for a compile-time
requirement is and what for a run-time requirement check.

Therefore I suggest to provide an additional switch to
let hp-check show only run-time requirements.

I think that hp-check may not check for compile-time requirements
at all because this could be done only by the configure script.

As far as I see, all run-time requirements seem to be fullfilled
on my system.

# hp-check -g
