No problem, Don.

Well, problem number one in building HPLIP was that it didn't play well
with any installation other than /usr. My usual habit, when compiling
code I'm not sure of, is to install it in a hierarchy
under /home/myaccount/software which is symlinked appropriately to keep
the binaries on my path, etc. Something in the build absolutely did not
like this. I don't recall the precise problem any longer because it was
solved by running the self-extracting installer and accepting its
default of /usr for the build. (I reasoned that if absolutely necessary
I could just kill anything that smelled of HPLIP and reinstall affected
packages from my repository).

The binary install did work in that it gave me a functioning print
environment. The GUI configuration tool, however, could not detect my
printer for love or money. CUPS could, though, and directed it to the
appropriate HP drivers so this wasn't so much a problem. The head
cleaning, et al utilities also worked.

And this takes us to the 600x600dpi problem.

I have an HP Deskjet D2368. All the docs I have available on it say
that this is a 1200x1200-capable printer (and even babble something
about "optimising" to 4800x1200, but I assume this is typical nonsense
hype and just ignore that part). If, however, I go into printer setup
-- whether through CUPS or through the HPLIP utilities like hp-toolkit
directly -- the highest resolution for printing that I can select is
600x600dpi, full colour bleed, photo paper. I cannot get a higher
resolution for love nor money. I can't see anything in the
configuration of the software nor in any of the utilities to boost that
any higher.

This is HPLIP 1.7.1 running under Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy) with CUPS
1.2.4-2ubuntu3.
