Yes, the box is conservative - ie Win + Mac are officially supported.

If HPLIP says it works on this machine then it will, it is simply that
for whatever reason, HP choose to support Linux down one avenue (which
is great and quite enlightened) but another branch of HP does not choose
to make a point of promoting this in the marketing.

I have a C6180 and it is excellent - I chose that model because I wanted
mine on the network, and indeed, it is the only consumer level device I
could find that supports scanning over IP. The last machine I had access
to (at work) that could do so was a Canon iR series and that's a bit out
of my price range for home use, not to mention it would probably fall
through my floor!!!
