long version: do not compare hplip, that is free software and supports perfectly hundreds of devices, with some "known bad by many" proprietary drivers for Linux. Be sure that your next printer you will be supported by hplip (see http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/index.html for that) and your printer problems will be gone.
