I am not the perfect Cups expert, but this is what I´d try to do: have you tried to use the old PPD with the newer version of HPLIP? The PPD file is a simple text file, under Linux you could use the KDE3 programm kdiff3 and load both PPDs and look at the differences, you may even create your own PPD by taking the stuff you need from the old one and paste it into the new one from 1.7.3. Ok, that´s just a thought, I don ´t know if the HPLIP developers would ever recommend to do this, but this is what I might try 1st.
