Try this workaround and let us know if it works for you.
 Edit the file, printer.h under hplip.1.7.x/prnt/hpijs
 Look for       inline virtual BOOL SupportSeparateBlack (PrintMode
*pCurrentMode) {return TRUE;}
 Change TRUE to FALSE in the above line
 Save the file
 make and install hplip

I experience exactly the same problem as Eric with bleeding text on
coloured background.

Network attached Photosmart 3210, HPLIP 1.7.4a on openSUSE 10.2.
Printing an Impress slide (from OpenOffice or exporting to pdf and then
printing the pdf)on HP Bright White Inkjet paper gives this bleeding.
Printing the same pdf from Windows XP gives perfect result.
