Some progress to report. I found libnetsnmp-devel. At least hp-check
no longer complains that it is missing. (When we are finished I will
file a gentoo bug that hplip should require net-analyzer/net-snmp.)

I can ping the printer (always could).

I believe snmpwalk was successful (it wasn't on my system before).
Specifically I obtained.

# snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 192.168.1.50 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.9.1.1.7.0

I am not sure how to check if UPD 161 and TCP 9100 are open. I did go
to my linksys WRT54G via the web interface (192.168.1.1) and disabled
the firewall. However, when I ran hp-setup, I again received the
message that I was unable to communicate with the device.

Thanks for your help to date and any further advice you can offer.

================================================================

Details follow.

The output of hp-check is attached below

The lj (laserjet 1200) is fine. I must have somehow introduced a typo
last time as the output does have the correct format (previously there
was a \ instead of an =). It installed fine using hp-setup.

The nyu (laserjet 4150) is a work printer that I installed via cups.
I have no issues with it. When I am back on campus I could try to
install it via hp-setup, but it is just a printer and the cups
installation is working fine.

The Officejet_7300 is the problem. I will delete it after sending
this message and reinstall it via cups so that I can print to it.
Scanning (xsane) does not work with the cups install. When I googled,
I found that installing via hp-setup is needed for most functions.

================================================================

The attempt to use hp-setup failed just as it did before solving the
libnetsnmp-devel issue. For completeness I attach my previous
description below.

I had previously installed the 7310 via the cups interface. Printing
was successful but scanning with xsane was not. Perusing the net
suggests that it is important to install via hp-setup. The following
occurred.

1. The same session management error occurred as before specifically

Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason :
None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and
    host-based authentication failed.

2. The wizard popped up and I selected "Network/..."

3. The 7310 was found with the correct IP address.

4. A "random" ppd file was suggested so I changed it to
    HP-OfficeJet_7300-hpijs.ppd.gz in /usr/share/ppd/HP/

5. An error occurred:

    A. A popup asserted Unable to communicate with the
device. Please check the device and try again.

    B. The gnome-terminal on which I ran hp-setup displayed

error: Unable to communicate with device:
          hpfax:/net/Officejet_7300_series?ip=192.168.1.50

error: Unable to communicate with the device.
Please check the device and try again.

6. I hit cancel on the popup, filled in the printer info on the next
screen and unchecked "setup PC send fax". (I would like to have
the PC send fax, but since the fax device had problems above I
though it wise to try the printer without the fax).

7. After pressing finish (with send test page selected) I received an
error "Unable to print to printer. Please check device and try
    again."

I am guessing that the session management error is not important
(since the laserjet worked) but that the unable to communicate with
device error is important.
