According to the supported printers table here,
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/combined.html

The minimum HPLIP version should be 1.7.4.

You'll need to upgrade from 1.6.6 to support the F4100 but you should
not have to upgrade Fedora Core 5.
