I don't know what kind of PC you are using, but parallel port support is
slow and process intensive. The reason for this is parallel port
hardware is not consistent between mother boards. So parallel support is
reduced the to lowest common denominator. All parallel port I/O is done
with low level User Mode software via the ppdev kernel module. So a slow
PC will not help.

USB I/O is faster because there is better kernel support for USB. All
USB I/O takes place in Kernel Mode via the USB hardware controller.
