this is the webs oldest art website? it has design and navigation of the early web as well. very clear navigation, but the aesthetic, interesting. a fascinating design phenomena here is that many of the graphic elements are obviously designed to be seen on lower resolution monitors, however on higher resolution monitors they become nearly unreadable but fit into the larger page composition as ornament. lots of extra ornamental elements derived from the mediums of the early web. good example here:

this page has a nice layout (yet with the tabs at the top...):

the overall composition holds up at various screen sizes despite the fixed size and position of the graphic elements. clicking a bit further brings the individual artists page, which again has clear navigation and holds up overall:

the worlds oldest art website contains almost all traditional media, primarily painting, which at the dawn of the net there was more of than digital. seems the structure was set then, the type of work presented almost seems like the kind you find at community run art galleries that charge a small fee to exhibit work, but on an international scale, and it doesn't look like they charge.

everything about this site is rustic, design techniques and organizational philosophy of the early web, yet it still continues to function fully as intended to from the beginning. the first time this site opened a gallery of real world art from artists around the world was available to a global audience, albeit an elite one. now with the ubiquity of the web this site still functions. because it utilizes all techniques from the early web it is highly accessible, almost any web browser could read this site (maybe even Netscape!)

this net museum is an amazing museum piece in and of itself.

the first thing it made me think of though is another, more recent, art site. one that charges you money, but one that you can also make money off of:

I think because of this newer model and the style of navigation, and the layout of page elements, and utilizing more modern web technologies it ends up processing a much larger volume of artists and audience, not to mention patrons. however this is at the cost of a certain genuineness that art addiction has. the real human connection harks back to days when people primarily met in real life to discuss things about the web. deviant art has the layers of generations who never experienced those days, the younger ones who are weened on social networking tools.

but then:

what is the world coming to?

salut,
-Joe

ps. I've been reading Tufte again, uh
