During this intensive workshop students will be introduced to the
lineage of documentary filmmaking and guided through the steps to take
to create successful documentary projects. Students progressively build
on skills, while being introduced to different approaches, styles and
filmmaking techniques. On selected weekends, students will have short
classes focusing on specific topics. The goal of the class is to give
students a chance to explore different styles of documentary in a
practical hands-on way, so they may develop a range of skills and a
personal style. In addition, each student will finish the workshop with
a story, treatment, pitch, budget, script and a short film. Students
will leave this class with a clear idea and a plan for the next steps
in their documentary career, as well as a completed documentary in
hand.
Students will be expected to spend time outside of class working on
their projects and in viewing many documentary films. Students will use
professional digital cameras and Final Cut Pro to edit their work.

meet the instructor:
Ben Saboonchian
Ben Saboonchian, a documentary writer-director for KIRO Television, CBS
News/Seattle, has written, produced, directed and edited hour-long
prime-time documentaries for 28 years. His work has received numerous
awards. "When the Salmon Runs Dry" was given the prestigious George
Foster Peabody Award in 1993. In 2002, Saboonchian was the recipient of
the coveted Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia Silver Baton for his documentary,
"Why the Orcas of Puget Sound are Dying." In 2003, Saboonchian's "War
of the Woods" received First Place from the National Headliner Awards;
Saboonchian received another National Headliner Award (Third Place) in
2005 for, "The Troubled Waters of Puget Sound." And in 2004, "The Epic
Journey," an examination of the Lewis & Clark expedition in the
Northwest, received the regional Edward R. Murrow Award for
documentary. For his body of work, 44 documentaries in all, Saboonchian
has won a total of 67 awards, including 9 national awards, 16 regional
Emmys, 5 regional Edward R. Murrow Awards and 25 other first place
awards in regional competitions. Some of his work has been showcased in
film festivals and workshops around the country, including the Hazel
Wolf Environmental Film Festival in Leavenworth, Washington; the
Siskiyou Environmental Film Festival in Ashland, Oregon, and the
Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism Workshop on Race and
Journalism in New York City. In addition to his documentary work,
Saboonchian has been teaching a class in Documentary Production at the
University of Washington Extension for 15 years.

Final Cut Pro 101 -- A Comprehensive Study: March 27-29; 10am-6pm

This three-day hands-on course introduces students to the primary
feature set and basic interface of Final Cut Pro. In this course, you
learn to perform basic editing functions while familiarizing yourself
with the user interface. Topics include basic setup, adjusting and
customizing preferences and settings, capturing video and audio,
various editing and trimming techniques, ripple, roll, slip and slide
tools, audio editing and audio creation, finishing and final output.
Who should attend? This class is designed for anyone looking to edit
professional-quality video using Final Cut Pro. Understanding of the
Macintosh operating system and basic computer navigation is desired.
The course is designed for those who prefer hands-on and interactive
instruction to best explore the full functionality of Final Cut Pro.
Certification: This course covers the requirements necessary to
successfully become an Apple Certified Pro, Level 1. The Certification
Exam is available at the end of the course and included in the cost.
You are required to have an Apple Tech ID number before registering for

day seminar on what it takes to successfully produce a documentary.
Using case studies from John's own 30 years of experience as well as
other successful documentary film productions this seminar breaks it
down into a task oriented and easy to understand work flow. From
picking dynamic subjects to identifying your audience, finding funding,
selecting characters, creating hooks, defining your message, connecting
your story to a campaign and more, the seminar covers the full spectrum
of what's involved and what to consider while producing a documentary.
Participants leave with the tools and knowledge needed to get started
as well as a clear understanding of the process from beginning to

A bold primer in both sailing fundamentals and renegade filmmaking
brought to you jointly by 911 Media Arts and The Center for Wooden
Boats. ARRRH! Students will learn to sail, and shoot and edit digital
video as they make films related to boats and the water. The meaning,
value, and history of piracy in all contexts will be laid open to
interpretation, while students are supplied with the tools and skills
they need to for such a journey into uncharted waters. By combining the
physical immediacy of sailing with the voice and power of filmmaking,
the class hopes to provide students with some survival skills for
navigating the strange seas of our time.

animation. With stop-motion, cut-out clip art, claymation and
flip-books, you'll work solo & team up to create cool cartoon
shorts on video. You'll edit, add music, & do voice-overs - the
real thing in the industry. On the last day you'll premiere them on
the big screen at 911 Media Arts & go home with your own
professionally mastered DVD.
