"Dreaming Machine #2" (Hong Kong)

A site-specific responsive installation by
Ben Bogart

Dreams are a complex interaction between our bodies, minds, memories, and
experiences. “Dreaming Machine” is a trajectory of site-specific artistic
works exploring the topic of dreaming. “Dreaming Machine #2“ was exhibited
in Hong Kong as a component of the Videotage artist residency program. The
project differs from “Dreaming Machine #1“ in that the dream is presented at
HD resolution on a 52″ LCD display. Additionally, the pan/tilt video camera
was replaced with a digital still camera on a pan/tilt tripod unit.

The system uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and a model of memory to
construct its dreams. The work is a continuation of the artist’s M.Sc.
thesis project entitled “Memory Association Machine” (MAM). Both MAM and
"Dreaming Machine" use a novel combination of AI and a cognitive model of
human creativity and memory. The model is manifested in two processes;
first, both systems use an artificial neural network (a Self-Organizing Map)
to integrate and organize visual sense experience into a field, and second,
the process is modeled on a creative free-association where elements of the
systems’ experience are selected using a model of propagation similar to a
cellular automata.

"Dreaming Machine" is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.

Self-Organized Landscapes & Portraits

“Self-Organized Landscapes" and "Self-Organized Portraits" are collages
composed of thousands of close-up images. The arrangment of these collages
are determined by a Self-Organizing Map (the AI used in "Dreaming Machine")
and reflect the structure of the collection of images. Similar images are
placed near one another and dissimilar images distant from one another.
