SEATTLE, WA – Velocity Dance Center started construction on their new
long-term home at 1621 12th Avenue. After months of fundraising,
permitting, and construction planning, the organization was able to start
demolition the second week of October, effectively starting the countdown to
their much-anticipated relocation.

“The project will take about eight weeks as long as there are no major hang
ups.” stated Velocity’s Executive Director Kara O’Toole. “Knowing there are
always issues that come up when overhauling old buildings we are
conservatively estimating that we’ll open the new Velocity facility in early
2010.”

After the unexpected sale of the Odd Fellows Building, Velocity secured a
long-term lease at 1621 12th Avenue, the building that formerly housed the
Capitol Hill Arts Center. To date, support from 4Culture, local
foundations, Velocity’s board of directors, and individual contributions has
made a significant dent in the $740,000 Velocity Forever capital
campaign. Advocates
from the community and City of Seattle have contributed to helping Velocity
and Betty Linke, the building owner, move through the permitting
process. Model
Remodel, a local, certified green builder who has worked in the building
before, is handling the construction contract.

On Wednesday October 28th, Velocity will host a groundbreaking party open
to the community to celebrate the start of the build out.
