You should take a good look at the ht://Dig documentation at
http://www.htdig.org/, especially the section on "Configuration"
under the heading "General".
Once it's configured the way you want, you can build the initial
database using "rundig", which does a complete reindexing of your
site and builds the endings and synonyms databases. You can also
use "rundig" to reindex from scratch whenever you want. If you
find this is too slow, you can update the existing database by
running htdig then htmerge.
I see that the Debian package for htdig includes a cron script,
/etc/cron.daily/htdig, which will likely rebuild or update your
database nightly. Have a look at that script to make sure it does
what you want it to do. If you want to turn off automatic indexing,
you'll need to remove or disable this script.
