Hi again.  I forgot to mention in my earlier reply, that you
should probably try the latest 3.2.0b4 development snapshot at
http://www.htdig.org/files/snapshots/, to see if it works better.
The htmerge code still needs better error checking, but there may be
fixes in place in the newer code that prevent the corruption of the word
database in the first place.

If the error messages you're getting are the same as Dennis reported
in December, then there's a problem with compression/uncompression
in the word database.  I don't know if we've had any reports of such
problems before on Linux with libz, but all the more reason to try more
recent code.
