Do you see the same behavior for all searches? For the search leading to the results you describe above, have you tried more than one type of browser? It sounds like some sort of markup or unusual characters might be making it into the excerpts and seriously confusing the browser when it attempts to render the page. You might want to try looking at the raw HTML output from htsearch to see if there is anything unusual about the text that is replacing $(EXCERPT). It might also be worth getting rid of your current long.html altogether and replacing it with a fresh copy just in case that file somehow became corrupted.
