I had the same problem. I solved it by using the -u parameter with htdig:
htdig -u userid:passwd .....
I tried using the authorization attribute in htdig.conf but it did not work.
I also do not know how to specify several userids and passwords. can one give -u more
than once?

I have been building a site (www.ag2ag.com). We have htdig installed
and working properly on http and https. The issue that I am now running
into is how to index the entire site. Some of the "storefronts" require
a login for users to be able to access it. These sites are not being
indexed. I have tried using the authentication part of htdig with the
-u but it doesn't seems to work.
Does anybody have any tricks for indexing the site any other way?
