According to Glaucio Rocha:

Running htdig without the -i option should keep the old records in the
database, as long as the documents from which they originated are still
around. htdig will just ask the server if they were modified since last
indexed, which is much quicker than indexing from scratch, as long as
they are static documents and not dynamically generated content.

Unfortunately, in the 3.1.x series of htdig, there's no way to update an
existing database without rechecking everything that's in the database
already. A work-around to this is to build a new database with the new
documents you want to index, and merge it into the existing database
with a command like: htmerge -c old.conf -m new.conf

In version 3.2.0b3, there will be a "minimal file" option (-m) on htdig,
in which you can provide a file of URLs to add to the database without
rechecking what's there already. This option is not available in the
current stable release, 3.1.5.
