This is what most people mean by "stemming," though the example you 
give probably goes further than most people would want to do. Usual 
examples are things like "run," "running," "runner," etc.

This is one reason ht://Dig doesn't do stemming--people have their 
own definitions of how it should be done. So "fuzzy matching" can be 
done at search time with the whole word database.
