You can't just run "htdig" since it does not directly generate searchable
databases. The rundig script generates an initial dig (htdig and then
htmerge) and runs htfuzzy for the default synonyms and endings
databases. If you want other htfuzzy databases, they will change depending
on your wordlist and so you will also want to run that.

The rundig script (it's just a series of shell commands) will wrap around
a variety of things. For example, my version uses the -a flag and moves
that resulting .work databases into place:
