Then the download gets much larger. Granted, it's better than saying "you
have to have libcurl or libwww before compiling," but there's always a
downside.

Keep in mind that the differences in the codes cropped up for a
reason. Libcurl didn't exist when the HTTP/1.1 code went into the 3.2 code
or when the Transport classes were created. At this point, unless someone
volunteers to rewrite the code to an external library like libwww or
libcurl, it won't be done.
