[htdig] Support Platforms

I am looking for a search tool for a network of sites hosted at various locations.  Most are running Win NT, but others are on Solaris and Linux.  I see from documentation that Windows are not supported but that HtDig it can span several servers – and the type of server doesn’t matter as long as it understands a common protocol. (e.g. http)  So what does this mean – that I cannot run HtDig on the Windows machine but they can be remotely searched and indexed?  Will this be a problem or should I look to another solution?   Thanks-   -jack
