This is something I have actually wanted to do myself.

I remember either Gilles or Geoff saying something
like the fact that it was a bit too open ended because
you weren't searching for a *particular* meta tag.

So - maybe the way around this would be to add
a config capability to be able to specify in
what meta tags should be recorded as user
variables, up to a maximum of say 10.

Something like:

    user_variable_1 : my_meta_tag_name_1
    user_variable_2 : my_meta_tag_name_2
    ....

These values would all default to "none". htdig would
then only save the values it was asked to save.

These could then be inserted in search results
as $(USER_VARIABLE_1) , $(USER_VARIABLE_2) etc

Would this work? Seems incredibly clunky but
it would be a way to get some very handy
functionality in.
