Below is a copy of his message, including address. Instead of switching to a beta version that may not have resolved my problem, I upgraded the server partition from ext3 to Reiser file system which will handle a single file many times larger than my whole array (up to an exabyte, I think) and performs very well with both large and small files due to block "sub-allocation", journaling, etc. The conversion took only minutes, but the data restore took a significantly longer amount of time. Everything is back up and running fine and even faster! If anyone else runs into the maximum file size issue on RedHat 7.3 on x86 architecture and wants to give this a try, feel free to contact me off-list and I will be happy to tell you how the conversion was done. There are also many good websites including http://www.namesys.com, from the folks who wrote the Reiser file system.
