Unless you are really trying to squeeze out every last possible
bit of performance, I would say no. Under normal circumstances,
the difference in performance isn't likely to be noticeable.
Also, if it isn't clear, it isn't just a matter of recompiling
with your new templates in place. You would also need to modify
the source code. The builtin templates are hard coded into a
method in TemplateList.cc.
