OK, so that's your RAM. But how much free disk space do you have? In 
particular, mkstemp is creating temporary files--probably in /tmp on 
your system. (This depends on your sort program and whether it respects 
the TMPDIR environment variable.)

So if your /tmp drive is running out of disk space, the word sort will 
indeed fail.
