According to pp:

Actually, the matchesperpage input parameter overrides any matches_per_page
setting in your config file.  The only thing I could see that would override
matchesperpage would be if you also had matches_per_page in allow_in_form,
and you had a matches_per_page input parameter.  Of course, that should
show up in your query string.

The only other explanations I can think of are:

- There's some sort of embedded character in your matchesperpage value,
like a backspace, which is causing it be be rejected.  How did you edit
your search form?  Does anything odd show up when you view it with "cat -v"?

- The 3.1.6-1 version is a Debian or RPM package that includes a patch
that breaks the matchesperpage handling.  Where did you get this package?
Can you get listings of the patches they used?
