[htdig] cause of error message in /var/log/httpd/error_log

Can someone suggest what might be causing the following error in /var/log/httpd/error_log:

DB2 problem...: /var/htdig/common/synonyms.db: No such file or directory

My guess is that I need to create the synonyms.db before telling htsearch or htdig to use it in my .conf file. Is that right? Is that even an option with htdig 3.1.6?
