Have a look at the db.wordlist file in your database directory. Are there words in there? If so, try searching for a word you know is in the list. If that fails, the problem is likely with htsearch, or possibly htmerge. More likely, though, is that db.wordlist doesn't contain any of the search words you've been trying, because htdig hasn't indexed everything you think it should have.
