I downloaded the acroread program from adobe and installed it on my Linux Redhat system. Then, I added the pdf filter commands to the configuration file. All of this is readily available in the documentation and it does work. Just make sure the software "knows" where the acroread is installed and you have selected this as the filter for pdf files.
