I don't really understand the criteria HTDig uses to rank pages, and the weight given to different aspects. But sometimes its logic totally escapes me -- most of those 9 pages listed above the main Hog Information & Resources page for a "hog resources" search hardly even mention hogs, and they don't even mention it in their titles or META Description or Keyword tags.
To get a feel for some of the elements involved in ranking, you might want to read up on all of the *_factor attributes. In addition providing some insight into ranking factors, the descriptions also demonstrate how you can change the weights used to rank your documents.
Pay special attention to backlink_factor (http://www.htdig.org/attrs.html#backlink_factor), as this has perhaps the least intuitive effect on the results. This factor adjusts the weight of a particular document based on the number of links that point to it. So even with a single occurrence of a term in an uninteresting location, a document may still end up ranked highly if it is linked from a number of other documents.
