You could probably use the "restrict" config option.
This is easy to implement and doesnt require changing
your indexing options. 

Restrict allows you to restrict search results to
documents with URLs that match the given search
pattern . You could setup <SELECT> on your search form
with  options something like: 
All Documents
Intranet Documents
External Documents
