I don't think that the file you are referring to is something generated by a default ht://Dig install. How are you running your dig? It sounds as if you are using some sort of custom script that is perhaps redirecting the output of the ht://Dig programs to a log file. If that is the case, then that file might hold a clue as to what is happening when things appear to timeout (or whatever it is that is happening). Beyond that, I am not sure that I understand your question. You say that htsearch works fine with or without the file? Under what circumstances does it not work? If htsearch doesn't appear to work while that file is still being updated, I would guess that the dig is not yet complete and your databases not ready for searching (assuming that you are not using alternate work files for the dig by way of the -a option). I would suggest you take a look at the tail end of the log file that is being generated and the script being used to run the dig. One of those two items is likely to shed some light on what is happening.
