Depending on how you have things setup, the easiest way to get rid of the stars might be to set the use_star_image attribute to no. If on the other hand you have already enabled the use of custom templates, then you can just remove the STARSLEFT and/or STARSRIGHT variables from the templates (e.g. long.html and short.html).
