yeah I found out the hard way about the -w option a little while back.
I still have no idea why they would default it to the other mode.

In its default mode, pico can be a little reckless with regard to long
lines (longer than the length at which it wants to wrap). If you edit such
a line, it will break the line with a hard return. This would almost
guarantee a corrupt config file.
If you need to use pico for such things, be sure to start it up with the
-w option, which will disable wrapping. If you already know all of this,
never mind :)
