Are you placing the starting URLs on separate lines? If so, are you adding a line continuation character (\) at the end of each line? If you are using line continuation characters, note that they must be the last thing on the line; even an additional space character will create problems.
If that is not the problem, then as previously suggested you might want to provide the relevant portions of your config file. At the least, it would be helpful to see start_url and limit_urls_to.
