Raschin, I think that your questions are aimed at the wrong people. Careful monitoring of your server will tell you whether or not it is thrashing, what the peak disc access' is etc... Only by comparing all of these issues can you understand the problem, and therefore any ideas from this list would be no better than guess work until then.
