[htdig] pdftotext question

I am confused about the pdf searching for htdig 3.1.6. The configuration file refers to "pdftotext" (available from foolabs.com). But the site FAQ appears to imply that pdf searching is "built-in". Is pdftotext built as part of the compile and install? Or do I need to get pdftotext separately?
